components of fitness Flashcards
what is the definition of agility
the ability to change direction at speed whilst under control
what is the definition of balance
maintaining the centre of mass over the base of support (static and dynamic balance)
what is the definition of cardio-vascular endurance
the ability of the heart and lungs to supply oxygen to the working muscles
what is the definition of speed
distance/time OR the maximum rate at which an individual is able to perform a movement or cover a distance in a period of time
what is the definition of power
the product of speed and strength (speed x strength)
what is the definition of reaction time
the time taken to initiate a response to a stimulus
what is the definition of strength
the ability to overcome a resistance (maximal - the largest force possible in a single maximal contraction explosive - similar to power dynamic - similar to muscular endurance)
what is the definition of muscular endurance
the ability of a muscle or muscle groups to undergo repeated contractions avoiding fatigue
what is the definition of flexibility
the range of movement possible at a joint
what is the definition of co-ordination
the ability to use two or more parts of the body together smoothly and efficiently
what is static stretching
gradually extending the length of the muscle until it’s uncomfortable and hold for 10-30secs
what are the advantages of static stretching
can be done by virtually anyone and is safe
what are the disadvantages of static stretching
•over stretching can cause injury •can be time consuming to do
