questions ans answers Flashcards
name a long bone in the leg and give an example of a sporting movement it is used in (1 mark)
The femur (the biggest bone in the body) is a long bone in the leg and helps with gross movements, this could be useful in sports such as sprinting. It helps the person to get a further distance with the longer strides.
Protection is one of the functions of the skeleton. Identify three other functions of the skeleton. (3 marks)
movement, structure/shape, mineral storage
The skeleton has many functions. One of the functions of the skeleton is to provide protection. Give two examples from physical activity to explain how the skeleton provides protection. (4 marks)
In boxing, if someone punches straight at your chest flat bones, such as the sternum, in this example, would protect your vital organs such as the lungs and heart by taking the force of the punch and vibrating it throughout the bone instead of going right through. Another example is in football, if someone goes for a header, the cranium protects the brain with its plate like shapes (larger surface area to volume ratio) and makes the impact a lot easier to take for the brain.
Give two other functions of the skeleton other than protection, and give a sporting example of their use in physical activity. (4marks)
The skeleton also helps to make red blood cells, through the bone marrow, which provides oxygen throughout the body. In running or sports that require lots of breathing (energy through aerobic respiration) this is very useful. The skeleton also helps the person to make gross movements such as lunges, serves/hits in tennis, long jump and more. This allows the person to be more flexible with gross movements and is useful for gymnastics for example.
