Allens Test
While the patient makes a fist, occlude both the radial and ulnar arteries. Have client release fist and notice how the palm is pale. Release pressure on ONE artery and watch as blood flow returns to the palm.
Homan’s Sign
Raise patient’s leg with knee slightly bend. Dorsiflex foot and observe/evaluate for pain. Tests for DVT
Thoracic Expansion
Place your hands on the posterior chest wall with thumbs pressing together a small skin fold. As the client takes a deep breath, observe the movement of your thumbs.
Diaphragmatic Excursion
Have patient take a deep breath in and hold it. Percuss for the diaphragm. Next, have the patient take a deep breath out and hold hit. Percuss for the diaphragm and measure the distance.
Bronchophony
Place stethoscope on chest and have patient say “99.”
Egophony
Place stethoscope on chest and have patient say “EEEE.”
Whisper Pectoriloquy
Place stethoscope on chest and have the patient whisper a phrase such as “one, two, three.”
Corneal light reflex
Shine pen light right in between the eyes.
Cover/Uncover Test
Cover one eye at a time and quickly remove cover without the patient’s awareness. Observe the eye for any movement.
Whisper Test
Stand behind patient and whisper an easy word to evaluate hearing
Rinne Test
Strike the tuning fork and place on the mastoid bone behind the ear. When the patient stopped hearing the vibration, move the tuning fork to in front of the ear canal.
Weber Test
Strike the tuning fork and place it somewhere on the center of the head. Ask if the patient heard it equally in both ears.
Romberg Test
Have patients stand straight up with arms by their side. Observe balance with eyes open and eyes closed.
Nuchal Rigidity
Have patient tuck chin to chest.
Kernig’s Sign
Raise patient’s leg and attempt to extend a flexed knee.
Brudzinski’s Sign
Have patient tuck chin to chest
Fluid Wave Test
Press on one side of abdomen and see if the fluid waves
Shifting Dullness Test
Position the patient supine and then side lying and percuss for the line of dullness in both positions.
Rebound Tenderness
Apply firm pressure to abdomen at 90 degree angle on tender side then quickly release pressure
Psoas Sign
Patient supine & does straight leg raise against resistance
Obturator Muscle Test
Patient supine, flex leg at knees and hips, internal & external rotation
Murphy’s Sign
Supine position, palpate liver margin while patient takes a deep breath
Straight Leg raising test
Patient supine, examiner’s hand on heel & other hand behind calf of same leg, raise leg to angle of pain then dorsiflex foot
Tinel’s Sign
Patient sitting, elbow fixed and wrist upward, tap on median nerve
Phalen’s Sign
Patient sitting, elbows flexed and back of hand pressed together for 1 minute
Bulge Test
Stroke medial side of knee upward with ball of hand 3-4 times. Press on lateral knee and lock forward bulge on medial side. Look for bulging on median side of knee SMALL AMOUNT OF LIQUID
Ballottement Test
With non-dominant hand squeeze about patella. With other hand, press patella against toward femur to assess for click or fluid wave. TESTS FOR LARGE AMOUNTS OF FLUID
McMurray’s Test
Flex knee and hip of affected leg. Press thumb & index fingers on opposite sides of knee. With other hand, rotate lower leg laterally noting pain or clicking; checks for torn menuscuc
