Types Of Synovial Joints Flashcards
A. Plane(gliding)
1. Articulating surfaces are flat and slightly curved
2. Allows sliding movements in one or two planes
Ex: intercarpal and intertarsal joints
B. Hinge
1.rounded process of one bone fits into a concave surface of other bone
2. allows for movement in one plane, usually flexion and extension
Ex: elbow, interphalangeal joints
C. Pivot
1. rounded surface of one bone articulates with fossa in or foramen of another bone
2. Allows rotational movement in one plane
Ex: atlantoaxial joint
D. Condyloid (Ellipsoidal)
1. Oval condyle of one bone fits into ellipsoidal depression bone
2. Allows for two way movement
Ex:wrist, metacarpophalangeal joints
E. Saddle
1.convex, addle shaped surface of one bone fits into concave surface of another bone
- Allows for two-way movement
Example: thumb/wrist joint
F. Ball and Socket
1. Ball shaped head of one bone fits into a cup like depression of another bone
2. Allows for multiple movement
Ex: hip and shoulder joints
