Types of LTM Flashcards
1
Q
what is time stamped
A
can remember exactly when something occurred/ was learnt
2
Q
who proposed the 3 types
A
Endel Tulving
3
Q
what are the 3 types
A
Episodic
semantic
procedural
4
Q
what is episodic memory
A
refers to the ability to remember events from past
-time -stamped
5
Q
what is semantic memory
A
refers to factual info/knowledge of world
-not time-stamped
6
Q
what is procedural memory
A
refers to memory of how we do things (eg. driving)
7
Q
strengths of LTM types
A
REAL-LIFE APPLICATION
-supporting research
helps to understand memory related problems eg. memory loss
-can help distinguish treatment needed
RELIABILITY
- clinical evidence ( HM ) Henry molaison and Clive Wearing
- episodic memory in these people was severely damaged however semantic memory wasn’t affected
- supports Tulving as shows there are different memory stores in LTM as one could be damaged and one not.
8
Q
Limitations of LTM types
A
LOW RELIABILITY
- neuroimaging evidence
- conflicting research findings findings that link LTM types to areas of brain
- psychologists found that semantic was on left prefrontal cortex and episodic on right
- however…other research contradicts this showing other way around.
- challenges evidence
9
Q
who is Clive Wearing
A
- severe amnesia from viral infection attacked brain
- can remember some aspects but not others
- procedual memory= not affected
- episodic memory= damaged
