Q

Peterson and Peterson

A

-to find out duration of STM

  • trigrams study
  • had intervals when counting backwards for certain time period (prevents reversal)
  • asked to recall trigrams after 3,6,9,12,14,16,18 seconds
  • longer the interval= decreased recall levels
  • shows that there’s a limited duration in STM

Q

Bahrick

A

-to find out duration and capacity of LTM

  • yearbook names and photos study of 50
  • 392 ohio citizens
  • asked to recall after 15/48 years.

-photos 15=90% recall 48= 70% recall
name 15= 90% recall 48= 80% recall

shows that LTM has unlimited duration as recall remained fairly accurate

Q

Jacobs

A
  • to find capacity of STM

-used his own students as Ps
-DIGIT SPAN
-repeating string of numbers that got larger
-Ps could recall 9.3 digits/7.3 letters on average
supported by miller 7plus minus 2 items

Q

Baddeley

A
  • find the encoding of LTM and STM
  • 4 groups had to learn different word lists
  • semantically similar/ dissimilar
  • acoustically similar/ dissimilar

LTM results - lowest recall when words had same meaning (semantically similar)
STM results- lowest recall when words sounded same (acoustically similar)

17
Q

Miller

A

‘magic number 7’ theory
made everyday observations
saw that things came in 7’s eg. days of week.

noticed people could easily recall 5 letters/ digits through chunking (grouping together)
