Types Of Guidance Flashcards
The four types of guidance?
Visual, verbal, manual and mechanical
Visual guidance
This is when the performer is shown how to perform the skill. Visual guidance is good for beginners so they can create a mental image of the movements and the skill
Examples of this are:
A video
Pictures or sketches
Good quality demonstration.
This can be used in sports where you need guidance to improve a skill, like a shot in basketball.
Advantages:
The performer can copy the demonstration
It can be used for groups of people
Disadvantages:
If the demonstration is poor, the shot could be practised incorrectly.
Verbal guidance
This is when a coach describes how to perform a skill or tells a performer something.
This can be used during games or individual sports for feedback on skills during games.
Advantages:
It’s useful for high-level performers
It’s a good way of highlighting key teaching points
Disadvantages:
This can result in information overload
It can be boring
Can be difficult in sports arenas which are noisy
Manual guidance
This involves a coach physically moving a performer into the correct position or supporting them as they perform a skill.
Can be used in sports like golf or tennis to perfect a shot
Advantages:
It’s good for complete beginners
It can allow performers to develop the correct feel of movements
Disadvantages:
A movement can feel different when someone else is moving your body for you.
The performer may not thing that they are actually performing it themselves
Mechanical guidance
This is when equipment is used to assist in the coaching process. This could take the form of floats in swimming or a harness in diving or gymnastics.
Advantages:
It’s good for potentially dangerous skills
Good for building confidence
Disadvantages:
The equipment could be expensive
The performer could come to rely on the equipment
