Types Of Experiments Flashcards
What is a laboratory experiment?
An experiment carried out in a controlled (lab) setting
What is a field experiment?
A controlled experiment conducted outside of a lab setting
What is a natural experiment?
An experiment with no directly manipulated independent variable
What is a quasi experiment?
An experiment that focuses on naturally occurring independent variables. There is a difference that exists between people e.g. gender
What are the strengths of a laboratory experiment?
Can be easily replicated, minimal extraneous variables
What are the weaknesses of a laboratory experiment?
Lacks ecological validity
What are the strengths of a field experiment?
Participants are unaware they are being studied so no social desirability bias, reduction in demand characteristics that could alter results
What are the weaknesses of a field experiment?
Can be time consuming, lacks internal validity, ethical issues
What are the strengths of a natural experiment?
High mundane realism
What are the weaknesses of a natural experiment?
Can not form casual relationships as independent variable is not directly manipulated
What are the strengths of a quasi experiment?
Allows comparison between different types of people
What are the weaknesses of a quasi experiment?
Lacks internal validity, random allocation is not possible
