Experimental Design Flashcards
What is a repeated measures design?
Where all participants complete all conditions
What is an independent measures design?
Where participants are placed into groups and tested on ONE independent variable
What is a matched pairs design?
Where two participants are matched based on key characteristics then placed into different groups
What are the strengths of a repeated measures design?
Doesn’t require many participants
What are the weaknesses of a repeated measures design?
Order effects e.g. fatigue
What are the strengths of an independent measures design?
No order effects
What are the weaknesses of an independent measures design?
Needs a lot of participants, no control of participants variables
What are the strengths of using a matched pairs design?
No order effects
What are the weaknesses of using a matched pairs design?
Can be time consuming
Repeated measures design: How to overcome the limitations?
By counterbalancing (doing conditions in different orders e.g. BA and then AB)
Independent measures design: How to overcome the limitations?
Random allocation- participants can be randomly allocated to distribute participant variables
Matches pairs design: How to overcome the limitations?
Conduct a pilot study to determine the key characteristics you want to focus on
