Sampling Flashcards
What is sampling?
The method used to select participants or to sample behaviours in an observation
What is the population?
The group of people that the researcher is interested in
What is meant by the term generalisation?
Applying the findings of a particular study to the wider population
What is opportunity sampling?
Where participants who are most convenient/ available are recruited
What is random sampling?
Where participants are selected in a way that everyone has an equal chance of being picked
What is stratified sampling?
Identifying subgroups according to their frequency and randomly selecting participants from each subgroup
What is systematic sampling?
Selecting every nth person
What is volunteer sampling?
Where people choose to take part in a study/ piece of research
What is an advantage and disadvantage of opportunity sampling?
ADVANTAGE- very quick
DISADVANTAGE- can not be generalised
What is an advantage and disadvantage of random sampling?
ADVANTAGE- unbiased
DISADVANTAGE- time consuming
What is an advantage and disadvantage of stratified sampling?
ADVANTAGE- easy to generalise
DISADVANTAGE- time consuming
What is an advantage and disadvantage of systematic sampling?
ADVANTAGE- unbiased
DISADVANTAGE- not truly random unless ‘n’ is used
What is an advantage and disadvantage of volunteer sampling?
ADVANTAGE- allows for a variety of participants
DISADVANTAGE- volunteer bias
