Types of experiment Flashcards
What are the four types of experiment?
Lab, field, natural and quasi
What is a laboratory experiment?
An experiment that takes place in a controlled experiment within which the researcher manipulated the IV and records the effect on the DV whilst maintaining strict control of extraneous variables
What is a field experiment?
An experiment that takes place in a natural setting within which the researcher manipulates the IV and records the effect on the DV
What is a natural experiment?
An experiment where the change in the IV is not brought about by the researcher but would have happened even if the researcher had not been there and the researcher records the effect on the DV they have decided on
What is a quasi experiment?
A study that almost lacks the key ingredients as the IV has not been determined by anyone but the variables simply exist so it not an experiment
What is the difference in independent variables in the experiments?
In lab or field, the IV is manipulated by the experimenter but with natural and quasi, the independent variable exists and isn’t manipulated
Which experiments are not ‘true’ experiments?
Natural and quasi
Why are natural and quasi experiments not ‘true experiments?
Because you cannot manipulate the IV
What is an IV in a quasi experiment?
A variable that already exists, e.g, age or gender
What is an IV in a natural experiment?
Something that would have already happened, e.g, people getting TV
