What is a briefing?
It is part of a consent form and informs participants about anything that might effect their willingness to participate
What are factors that affect willingness?
Time study takes, if it causes harm, the benefit for participants and if the task is too difficult or stressful
What is the purpose of a briefing?
To gain participants consent and inform them
What is the limit with briefing?
The participant cannot be briefed too much because this increases demand characteristics
What needs to be included in a briefing?
Key information about the study, how ethical issues will be dealt with, an opportunity to ask questions and a declaration of consent
What is the intention of debriefs?
To enable participants to leave the study the same state they entered
What is the purpose of debriefs?
To reveal and explain any deception, remind participants to withdraw data and the monitor any unforeseen effects or consequences and offer support.
What needs to be included in a debriefing?
Preliminaries - thanks the participants, procedure - clarify any aims of the study and reveal any deception and ethical - deal with any remaining issues
