Types Of Data Flashcards
What is quantitative data
Data that can be numerically analysed and quantified into hard facts.
Quantitative data strengths
- Quick and easy to collect.
- Less susceptible to bias.
- Can be analysed for patterns and trends.
Quantitative data limitations
- Lacks depth and context.
- Can oversimplify emotion and experience by limited participant response.
What is qualitative data
Non numerical data that describes qualities, opinions or feelings.
Qualitative data strengths
- More detailed which allows the researcher to find the subtle issues.
- Allows participants to give the response they want.
Qualitative data limitations
- Takes time and experience to collect, interpret and analyse data.
- Can be susceptible to bias.
What is primary data
Original data collected. Specifically by the research first hand from participants.
Primary data strengths
- Specifically related to the hypothesis tested.
- Confidence in quality.
- Up to date.
- Greater insight.
Primary data limitations
- Time and effort
-Expensive
What is secondary data
Indirectly gathered from other sources.
Secondary data strengths
- Easily accessible.
- Cheap to use.
Secondary data limitations
- Variation in quality and accuracy.
- Outdated.
- Data is not specific to the hypothesis being tested.
- May lack insight.
What is meta analysis
Data gathered from a large number of studies is analysed and collected to draw an overall conclusion.
Meta analysis strengths
- Increased validity as based on a wide range of data.
- Generalisability of results.
Meta analysis limitations
- Research designs vary so are not truly comparable.
- Bias
