Experimental Designs Flashcards

1

2
Q

Independent groups strengths

A
  • Order effects can’t be observed, as no participant will be used in more than one condition.
  • Data collection will be less time consuming if all conditions of the experiment can be conducted simultaneously.

Q

Independent groups limitations

A
  • Different participants need to be recruited for each condition, which can be difficult and expensive.
  • There is a risk of participant variables, affecting the results between conditions, rather than solely manipulated of the independent variables.

Q

What are repeated measure designs

A

All participants take part in all conditions of the experiment (one group).

Q

Repeated measure strengths

A
  • The results will not be subject to participant variables putting more confidence in DV changes solely due to manipulated changes in the IV.
  • As the same participants are used at least twice, extra participants do not need to be recruited.

Q

Repeated measures limitations

A
  • There is a of observing order effects- (practice or fatigue).
  • If a participant drops out, data will be lost from all conditions of the experiment rather than one.

Q

What is a matched pairs design

A

Pairs of participants are matched in terms of key variables, such as age. One member of each pair is then placed into the experimental group and the other member into the control group.

Q

Matched pairs strengths

A
  • Order effects will not be observed as participants only take part in one condition.
  • The tailored participant matching process reduces the risk of participant variables (individual differences) from affecting results between conditions.

Q

Matched pair’s limitations

A
  • Different participants need to be recruited for each condition, which is difficult and expensive.
  • Matching is a more complex process, and it will always be very difficult to match participants identically.
