Sampling Methods Flashcards
What is volunteer sampling
Here the sample consists of people who have self-selected themselves to be in the study.
Volunteer sampling- Strengths
- Less time consuming.
Volunteer sampling- Weakness
- Suffers from volunteer bias.
What is opportunity sampling
Participants who are both accessible and willing to take part are targeted.
Opportunity sampling- Strengths
- Low time and effort required.
Opportunity sampling- Weakness
- Highly unrepresentative.
- Suffers from researcher bias.
What is random sampling
This method gives every member of the target group an equal chance of being selected for the sample.
Random sampling- Strengths
- No researcher bias.
- Likely to be more representative than some other methods.
Random sampling- Weakness
- Time consuming.
- Sample could be unrepresentative.
- Participants may refuse to take part.
What is systematic sampling
Researchers select members of the population at a regular interval determined in advance.
Systematic sampling- Strengths
- No researcher bias.
- Usually fairly representative.
Systematic sampling- Weakness
- Possible sample bias.
What is stratified sampling
Classifying the target population into categories and then choosing a sample which consists of participants from each category in the same proportions as they are in the target population.
Stratified sampling- Strengths
- No researcher bias.
- Highly representative.
Stratified sampling- Weakness
- Very time consuming.
- Strata may not be fully representative of everyone.
