what is social influence
-the process whereby people directly or indirectly influence the thoughts, feelings and actions of others
what is conformity
-a type of social influence involving a change in belief or behaviour in order to fit in with a group
why is conformity good
-its an essential social mechanism in society e.g. forming queues, saying hello
-without it we would not have social norms and acceptable behaviour
why is conformity bad
-an independent behaviour that doesn’t conform to established social norms is an essential mechanism for social change e.g. suffragette movement and civil right activists

-identification
-internalisation
what is internalisation
-genuinely accepting group norms
-results in private and public change of opinion and behaviour
-permanent because attitudes have become the way someone thinks, even in absence of others
what is identification
-identify with the group so want to be part of it (has to have people present) bc we value it
-publicly changing both opinions and behaviour to be accepted even if we don’t privately agree
-return back to private beliefs immediately after the group has gone
-short term
what is compliance
-simply going along with others
-privately not changing personal opinions or behaviour even with group
-results in superficial change
-particular behaviour stops as soon as group pressure stops

-yes but only temporarily whilst with group
-not like compliance when it never changes
