treatments of OCD Flashcards
what is the main way to treat OCD
-with Drug therapy/ medicated drugs
-biological therapy assumes theres a chemical imbalance in the brain
-drugs increase or decrease neurotransmitters in the brain
Main drug in treating OCD
SSRI
-type of anti depressant
-causes the oriofrontal cortex to function more normally
how do SSRIs work
-increasing seratonin
-block it from being reabsorbed into presynaptic nerve
-increase levels of seratonin in synapse so continue to stimulate postsynaptic nerve
alternative drug treatment
-Tricyclics
-Benzodiazepines (BZs)
-D-cyloserine
what is a tricyclic
-Antidepressant
-affects serotonin and noradrenaline
-blocks reabsorption of neurotransmitters same way as SSRI
-has more side effects as it also affects another neurotransmitter
-only used if SSRI is ineffective
what is a Benzodiazepine (BZ)
-anti-anxiety
-affects neurotransmitter called GABA
-reacts w GABA receptors on postsynaptic neurone allowing increase flow of CL- ions
-side effects include drowsiness, agression, addiction
what can SSRIs be paired with
-talk therapy
-such as CBT
-drugs reduce emotional symptoms such as anxiety
-meaning patient can engage more effectively with CBT
-some sufferers may respond best to CBT alone without medication
how does GABA work (BZ)
-when GABA locks into receptors, opens a channel that increases flow of chloride ions into neurone
-these ions have inhibatory effect, slowing its activity, making the individual more relaxed
