Types of chemical reactions Flashcards
What is a synthesis reaction?
A synthesis reaction, also known as a direct combination or combination reaction, is a chemical process in which two or more simple elements or compounds combine to form a more complex product. It is represented by the equation: A + B → AB.
What is a decomposition reaction?
A decomposition reaction is a reaction in which a compound breaks down into two or more simpler substances. The general form of a decomposition reaction is: AB→A+B. Most decomposition reactions require an input of energy in the form of heat, light, or electricity.
What is a displacement reaction?
A displacement reaction occurs when a more reactive element displaces, or pushes out, a less reactive element from a compound that contains the less reactive element.
