Chemistry Basics Flashcards
What is the location, charge, and relative mass of a proton?
Located in the nucleus, has a positive charge of 1+, and has a mass of 1.008/1
What is the location, charge, and relative mass of a neutron?
Located in the nucleus, has a neutral charge of 0, and has a mass of 1.007/1
What is the location, charge, and relative mass of a electron?
Located in the electron shells, has a negative charge of 1-, and has a mass of 0.000548 / unrelative (not counted)
What is the nucleus, its charge and location?
Consists of protons and neutrons giving it an overall positive charge, and is located at the centre of an atom
What are the electron shells and their location and charge?
Have an overall negative charge as they “hold” electrons and reside around the nucleus
How can the mass number and atomic number can be used to determine the number of protons, electrons, and neutrons in an atom/isotope
The mass number is the amount of protons and neutrons but taking the atomic number away from this (the amount of protons) gives you the amount of neutrons. And the amount of electrons are equal to the amount of protons.
What is a Bohr diagram?
Bohr Diagram: Bohr diagrams show electrons orbiting the nucleus of an atom somewhat like planets orbit around the sun.
What is electron configuration?
Electron configurations describe where electrons are located around the nucleus of an atom.
