Diving to multiply Flashcards
Mitosis
a type of cell division that results in two daughter cells each having the same number and kind of chromosomes as the parent nucleus, typical of ordinary tissue growth.
Meiosis
Process of going from diploid to haploid.
A parent cell (diploid) will undergo meiosis to create haploid daughter cells which halve the number of chromosomes.
Recall the sex chromosomes for humans, and describe how these determine gender
In humans, sex chromosomes determine an individual’s biological sex. There are two types of sex chromosomes: X and Y. Each person typically has two sex chromosomes, which can be in one of two combinations:
Sex Chromosomes
XX - Female
XY - Male
Diploid
A cell containing two copies of each chromosome
Haploid
A cell that contains a single set of chromosomes.
Genetic Variation
Genetic variation is the difference in DNA sequences between individuals within a population.
Crossing over
The exchange of DNA between paired homologous chromosomes (one from each parent) that occurs during the development of egg and sperm cells (meiosis).
