Covalent compounds Flashcards
How do covalent compounds form?
A covalent compound is made when two or more nonmetal atoms bond by sharing valence electrons.
Non-metal atoms share electrons to form covalent bonds
What is the difference between ionic and covalent bonding?
The difference between ionic and covalent bonds is how the electrons are used. In ionic bonding, one atom donates electrons to the other. In covalent bonding, the two atoms share electrons. Covalent bonds share electrons and ionic bonds donate electrons.
What are the properties of ionic compounds?
-Metal + non-metal
-Transfer electrons (from metal to non-metal)
-positive and negative charged ions
-solid at room temperature
-high melting and boiling points
-high attraction between particles
-soluble in water
-good electrical conductors
in molten and aqueous states
What is an ionic molecular compound?
ionic compounds are formed between metals and non-metals.
What are the properties of covalent compounds?
-Non-metals
-share valence electrons
-No charges
-solid liquid, or gas at room temperature
-Low melting or boiling points
-weak attraction between molecules
-generally soluble in water
-Poor electrical conductors (Good insulators)
