Types of cells Flashcards
Animal Cells
Animal cells have centrioles paired structures involved in cell division, and plants do not.
Plant Cells
Plant cells contain walls and chloroplasts ( with chlorophyll)… animal cells do no.
Animal Cells ( shape)
Irregular
Plant Cells ( shape)
Rectangular in shape
Organelles
1. Cell Membrane
Protective barrier around cell that allows different substances to move through it
Describe the cell membrane?
Made of a double layer of lipids
What is a cell
Basic unit of life
What Are Lipids?
Fat-like molecule that does not dissolve in water
- Cytoplasm
Jelly-like substance that fills the cell + surrounds the organelles
- Nucleus
The control centre of the cell ( controls growth, reproduction)
surrounded by nuclear envelope
Contains nucleolus ( produces ribosomes)
Contains the cells DNA
What is DNA?
DNA is ( Deoxyribonucleic acid) which codes for the making of proteins and other molecules
- Vacuole
Store nutrients, wastes, and other substances used by the cell.
In plant cells, the central vacuole stores water for the cell
Vesicles
Transport substances throughout the cell
- Mitochondria
Supplies energy to the cell
How does Mitochondria supply energy to the cell
It converts chemical energy in sugar into energy the cell can use
- Lysosomes
Filled with enzymes, breaks down bacteria, and damaged cell parts
Where does digestion occur ?
The Lysosomes
Enzymes
Proteins that speed up chemical reaction
- Endoplasmic Reticulum
Carries materials throughout the cell made of a series of interconnected tubes
7a. Rough Endoplasmic Reticulum( RER)
Has ribosomes attached to it
What are ribosomes?
Sites where proteins are assembled
7b. Smooth endoplasmic Reticulum
Has no ribosomes attached
- Golgi Apparatus
Modifies, sorts, packages proteins and other materials from E.R
- Centrioles
Involved in animal cell division
- Cytoskeleton
An internal network of fibres maintain the shape of the cells
Made up of microfilaments
What are microfilaments?
involved in muscle contracting and microtubes, act as tracks for movement
Where is the cell wall found?
Only found in plants
Cell wall description
Rigid frame provides strength, protection, and support
Chloroplasts
Only found in plant cells
Contain chlorophyll, includes thylakoids
Chlorophyll
A green substance that uses energy from the sun to convert CO2 and H2o into sugar and O2 during photosynthesis
Thylakoids
Little sacs stacked like coins that act as solar collectors are surrounded by a thick fluid called stroma
What are stacks of thylakoids called?
Granum
How do you find the total magnification seen in a microscope?
Magnification of object x Magnification of lens
(10x)(10x)=100x
What is resolution?
The ability to distinguish between 2 images
What is diffusion ?
The process for moving substances across the cell membrane
What is diffusion ?
The process for moving substances across the cell membrane
Parts of a microscope
