Cancer Flashcards
What happens when the cell cycle doesn’t work?
Cells will uncontrollably divide
This causes tumours
Why do some cells ignore signals to stop the cell cycle?
Because of a mutation in the cell
Why do some cells ignore signals to stop the cell cycle?
Because of a mutation in the cell
What is a mutation?
A change in the hereditary information carried in a cell’s DNA
2 types of tumours
Benign & Malignant
Benign Tumour
Does not spread to other parts of the body; happens at a moderate pace & does not destroy surrounding cells
Not necessarily cancerous
Malignant Tumour
Can spread to other parts of the body; happens at a quick pace & destroys surrounding cells
Malignant tumours are cancerous
Cancer?
Cells with abnormal genetic material that are dividing uncontrollably and can spread to other parts of the body
How do we find cancer ?
Medical scanning technologies
Medical scanning technologies
CT SCAN, MRIs , X-RAYS, Blood testing
How do we treat cancer ?
Chemotherapy
Radiation
Surgery
Chemotherapy
powerful drugs to kill cancerous cells
Radiation
Beams or radiation are targeted at tumours
Surgery
used to remove parts or whole tumour
