Respiratory System Flashcards
What do all cells in the body require oxygen to produce?
Energy
What is the energy used for
Growth, movement, and reproduction
Cellular Respiration
a series of chemical reactions that break down glucose to produce ATP,
Pharynx
The throat ( passage of air from the nose/ mouth)
Trachea
Flexible tube ringed with cartilage
Bronchus/ Bronchi
Branches from the Trachea
Alveoli
Tiny air sacs which are the site of gas exchange
Bronchioles
smaller branches
Capillaries
Thin-walled blood vessels that surround the alveoli
Where does oxygen travel?
From the alveoli, through the capillaries, into the blood cells in the body
Lungs
Half of the lung’s mass is blood
Humans have 2 lungs in the chest cavity
enclosed by the ribs, chest muscles, and the diaphragm
Diaphragm
Smooth muscle
thin, dome-shaped muscle sits below your lungs and heart. It’s attached to your sternum
Breathing
The action of inhaling (taking in) and exhaling ( releasing)
Inhale
- Rib cage rises
- Diaphragm contracts and move downwards, which increases the size of your chest cavity
- Decrease in internal air pressure
-Air rushes into your lungs to equalize pressure
Exhale
- Rib cage lowers
- Diaphragm relaxes and moves upwards, which decreases the size of the chest cavity
- ## Air moves out of the lungs
