Types Of Bones & Bone Structure Flashcards
What are the 5 types of bones?
- Long bone
- Short bone
- Flat bones
- Irregular bones
- Sesamoid bones
What classifies a long bone?
Have a joint surface on either end and are operated by muscle
What are some examples of long bones?
Femur
Humerus
Cannon bones
What part of the long bone is the Epiphysis?
Each end proximal and distal
Articular cartilage is what?
Ends that articulate with another bone and are covered with cartilage that protects bone ends
What part of the long bone is the Metaphysis?
Middle portion between epiphysis and diaphysis
What part of the long bone is the growth plate located?
Metaphysis
What portion of the long bone is the diaphysis?
Middle portion
Where is yellow marrow stored in a long bone?
Medullary cavity in diaphysis
What are the 4 layers of bone from outside to inside?
- Periosteum
- Compact bones
- Cancellous / spongy bone
- Marrow
What is the periosteum?
Membranous tissue that covers outside of bone and is important for growing and repairing bones
What are compact bones? (Bone layers)
Dense material used to create the hard structure of the skeleton
What are cancellous/spongy bones? (Bone layers)
Full open sections called pores that are filled with marrow, nerves and blood vessels that carry nutrients in and out of bone
What is marrow? (Bone layers)
Soft sponge like tissue in center of most bones that produce WBC, RBC and platelets
Where is red marrow found in bones?
Flat bones
