Muscle Anatomy - Abdominal Muscles Flashcards
What are the 4 abdominal muscles?
Transverse abdominal oblique
Internal Abdominal oblique
External abdominal oblique
Rectus abdominus
Where does the transverse abdominal oblique muscle originate?
Cartilages from sternal ribs
Transverse processes of lumbar vertebrae
Where does the transverse abdominal oblique muscle insert?
Zyphoid process on Linea Alba (ventral midline)
What is the action of the transverse abdominal oblique muscle?
Breathing
Defecation
Where does internal abdominal oblique muscle originate?
Lumbar Coxae of ilium and inguinal ligament
Where does the internal abdominal oblique muscle insert?
Costal cartilages from 13th - 18th rib
Linea alba
Prepubic tendon
What is the action of the internal abdominal oblique muscle?
Flex trunk
Aids in expiration
Defecation
Parturition
Where does the external abdominal oblique muscle originate?
T4 ribs on lateral side
Where does the external abdominal oblique muscle insert?
Central portion ends at Linea Alba and prepubic tendon
What is the action of the external abdominal oblique?
When contracted it will arch back
Flex trunk laterally when one side is contracted
Aids in expiration, dedication and parturition
What is the most used abdominal muscle?
Rectus abdominus
What is the origin for the Rectus abdominus?
Costal cartilage of ribs and sternum
Where does the Rectus abdominus insert?
Cranial border of pubis via prebupic tendon
What is the action of the Rectus abdominus?
Supports the back and assists in flexing lumbo-sacral joint
