Types and methods of practice Flashcards
What is part practice ?
A method used for low organisation skills, broken down into sub-routines and leant in sections
What is whole practice ?
A method taught without breaking down into sub-routines so performer experiences kinaesthetic sense
What is whole-part-whole practice ?
The performer first attempts the whole sill, then practicing in sub-routines and targeting the weaknesses. Then putting them together again practiced as a whole
Give an example of whole-part-whole practice
- try complete lay-up
- reflection and feedback
- isolate the run-up and lay-up (practising separately)
- complete lay-up
What is progressive-part method ?
A serial skill is broken down into sub-routines seen as links of chain. Learn one link, then the second connect them then learn third and add the link.
(A-B-AB-C-ABC)
Give an example of progressive-part method
In breaststroke swimming, the leg action is separate to the arm action, learn these independently. After these have been learnt, the importance of timing between these movements can have the focus
What is massed practice ?
Continuous practice period with little to no rest intervals
What is distributed practice ?
Practice involving relatively long rest between trials
What is fixed practice ?
Practice that involves a stable, predictable environment with practice conditions remaining unchanging
What is varied practice ?
Practice is varied so the performer can come into contact with a range of experiences.
Involves an unstable, unpredictable environment
Give an example of varied practice
Primary school physical education gives each child variety of experiences (sports). Child gains experience for when faced with new experiences
