Transfer of skils Flashcards
What is positive transfer ?
When the learning of one skill enhances the learning of another
Give an example of positive transfer
Using the same technique in badminton for tennis
What is negative transfer ?
When the learning of one skill hinders the learning of another
Give an example of negative transfer
A rounded swing in golf compared to a straight bat swing in cricket
What is proactive transfer ?
the influence of one skill on a skill yet to be performed
What is retroactive transfer ?
the influence of one skill on the learning of a skill that has previously been learned
Give an example of proactive transfer
An over-arm throw used for a tennis serve
Give an example of retroactive transfer
A goal keeper who takes up rugby 2nd row
What is bilateral transfer ?
The skills learnt on one side of the body are transferred to the other through a motor programme
Give an example of bilateral transfer
Dribbling the ball in basketball
Describe what situational influences are
Positive transfer will occur if the practice conditions are as realistic as possible.
If the response to a training stimulus is not consistent to the demand of a real life experience, negative transfer will occur.
Give an example of a situational influence
A teacher may use traffic cones to coach dribbling skills in hockey but the method used to go around cones is very different to how a player will go around a real opponent.
What are motor programmes ?
A motor programme is a generalised series of movements stored in the long-term memory, retrieved by a single decision.
What do motor programmes do ?
They explain how we performed very quick actions in sport, like automatic movements not under the conscious control.
(If every decision was made about every single muscle action the info processing would take too long)
