What is Thorndike’s law of exercise ?
- Repeating the S-R connection to strengthen them
- If the desired response occurs, reinforcement is necessary
Give an example of the law of exercise
-If a gymnast practises floor routines repeatedly, the stimulus-response bond is exercised
- The more times it is practiced more likely the response will be bonded to stimulus
What is Thorndike’s law of effect ?
- If the response is followed by a ‘satisfier’ the S-R bond is strengthened
- If the response is followed by an ‘annoyer’ S-R bond weakened
- Pleasant outcomes motivate repetition of action
Give an example of the law of effect
Beginner rugby player attempts spins pass, if successful, more likely skill is performed successfully again
If unsuccessful, the effect is one that is subsequently avoided
What is Thorndike’s law of readiness ?
The performer must be physically and mentally able to complete the task effectively
Give an example of the law of readiness
- A hockey player drilled to perform a particular penalty flick which is predictable and demotivated by inhibition
- practice stopped, new strategies discussed and practiced later
- New targets set, practise resumes
What is Hull’s drive theory ?
- To have a strong S-R bond, performer must be motivated
- Too much repetition may lead to ‘inhibition’ and weaken S-R bond
- Inhibition can be overcome after rest intervals with new, more motivating goals
