Trunk ROM and MMT Flashcards
Trunk flexion w/ tape measure
C7 to L5
Have pt bend over “reversing” lordosis curve and not hinging at hips
No norms
Trunk flexion and extension w/ inclinometer
C7 and L5 in sagittal plane
Subtract the L5 # from C7 # to eliminate hip motion
No norms
Trunk extension w/ tape measure
C7 to L5
Pt put hands on hips for balance
No norms
Trunk SB ROM w/ tape measure
Tip of middle finger to floor
No norms
Trunk SB ROM w/ Goniometer
SA: perpendicular to floor
F: SI
MA: C7
No norms
Trunk SB ROM w/ inclinometer
C7 and L5 in frontal plane
No norms
Trunk rotation ROM w/ goniometer
SA: AC joint
Fulcrum: top of head
MA: follows AC
No standard or norm values
Arms across chest
Trunk rotation ROM w/ tape measure
Standing w/ arms across chest
AC to opposite ASIS
Trunk rotation ROM w/ inclinometer
Pt back parallel to floor against gravity, knees can be bent
C7 to L5 (?) in transverse plane
Cue pt to reach back and up toward ceiling
Trunk extension MMT against gravity
Prone- pt’s toes dug into table and hands behind head, PT holds pt’s ankles to stabilize
No 1-3
4- clear belly button but shakes going down
5- clear belly button and “sticks landing”
Thoracic extension MMT against gravity
Prone- pt’s chest hanging off table
3- arms at side; belly button clears table
4- pt’s HBH, able to get to horizontal w/ obvious effort
5- pt’s HBH, able to go to horizontal w/ no struggle
Thoracic MMT gravity eliminated
Prone- pt fully supported on table
2- partial range
1- palpate
0- no contraction
Trunk flexion MMT against gravity
Supine- legs straight, can stabilize pelvis if needed
3- pt’s arms full extension above body; pt lifts inferior angles off table
4- pt’s arms crossed over chest and clears inferior angles
5- pt’s HBH, raises inferior angles off table
Sequence 1 of trunk flexion MMT
Pt raises head from table
- If scapula don’t clear table then grade 2
- If pt can’t lift head proceed to sequence two
Sequence 2 for trunk flexion MMT
PT cradles upper trunk and head off table, ask pt to lean forward
- If ribs depress, grade 2
- If no depression but visible/palpable contraction, grade 1
- If no activity, grade 0 and move to sequence three
