Neuro Screen Flashcards
What is sensory integration?
The ability of the brain to organize, interpret, and use sensory information
What is somatosensation (somatosensory)?
Sensation received from the skin and musculoskeletal system
How does sensory info travels to the sensory cortex?
Peripheral receptors> through peripheral nerves> nerve roots> spinal cord> brain stem> thalamus> sensory cortex
What sensations are carried by the small unmyelinated fibers?
Pain and temperature sensation
What sensations are carried by large myelinated fibers?
Vibration and proprioception (joint position)
What does normal sensation allow a pt to detect?
-Pain (pin prick) and temperature in whichever area is tested
- Vibration at tips of fingers and toes
- Joint position (small amplitude movements) at distal joints
What causes sensory loss?
- Spinal cord lesions
- Nerve root lesion
- Peripheral neuropathy
- Peripheral nerve lesion
What are dermatome patterns?
Specific patterns of innervation as nerves exit the spinal column; Based on a general map
