1947 Truman doctrine
Truman established that the United States would provide political, military and economic assistance to all democratic nations under threat from external or internal authoritarian forces.
–> Prompting McCarthyism and the Red Scare but also caused by the Korean War and Communist China.
Cause for doctrine
Greek & Turkish instability, Truman claimed it stemmed from Monolithic Moscow
Marshall Plan
-Went into action in April 1948, driven by fear of Moscow.
-Proposed that the United States provide economic assistance to restore the economic infrastructure of postwar Europe.
-Transferred $13.3 billion in economic recovery programs to Western European economies after the end of World War II.
