Formation of Grand Alliance
USSR, USA, Britain create formal alliance in 1943.
American Involvement
Joined after the Dec 1941 bombing of Pearl Harbour.

USA & Britain supported anti communist troops during the 1917-21 Russian Civil War.

Profound American fear of communism as a result of ideological rivalry
Ideological reason for failure
Communism didn’t allow for a free market, fredom of speech or voting juxtaposing captalist ideals.
Alliance only worked during a time of peril
Tehran 1943
- Neutral meeting ground
- A great show that they could work together
- Stalin demanded help on the western front claiming British delays
- Roosevelt wanted pressure on Japan
- Britain wanted pressuer on Mediterranean
- Russia demands protection in Easter Europe
- Russians join United Nations
Yalta 1945
- Held once nations are clearly going to win ww2
- Consensus that Treaty of Versailles was a Complete failure
- Stalin calls for mutilation of Germany
- Chruchill & Roosevelt fear power vacum will cause rise of communism
- Collapse of grand alliance beggining due to end of war
Yalta 1945 outcomes
- Churchill agrees for Poland to go to Russia, 6 million of the red army occupy Eastern Europe
- Russia to join the war against Japan 3 months after the fall of germany
- Russia is denied 12 votes in the UN instead given 1
Potsdan 1945
- Allies won WW2
- Western allies occupy West Germany, Russia occupies Eastern Germany
- Germany Divided in to 4 zones, Berlin done the same
- Euorpean borders moved westward with Russia agreeing to democracy and to remove troops
Russia did not fufill this
Potsdan outcomes
- USA no longer wabts Soviet support due to fears of expansionism
- Americans drop A bomb on Japan in Aug 1945, Soviets do not join the war
- Bomb shows force
- UN is formed
UN security council consists of
USA, USSR, UK, China, France
all have veto power
