• The Cold War heated up in the Korean War, Stalin had been in charge for over 20 years, the arms race had taken off, US/USSR relations were at an all time low, USSR was trying to solidify control in Eastern Europe, China was a new ally (but not a good one).
• New ideological perspective - de-stalinization domestically and peaceful coexistence in foreign affairs. From 1953 - 1956 Khrushchev showed his inconsistency. From 1956 peaceful coexistence was hard to achieve. De-stalinization created many enemies and issues in Eastern Europe. The economy continued to struggle.
