Q

What is trauma informed care?

A

Trauma Informed Care is an approach that acknowledges the existence and significance trauma (past and present) plays in the health and recovery of our patients/clients.

The approach includes ensuring safety of both patient/client and provider; using supportive practices and environments to engage patient/client (s); being patient/client focused through collaboration and choice; and acknowledging the strength and resilience of the individual.

A form of care that takes the whole person into account. It realizeswhatwidespread trauma is and the different kinds of trauma and how trauma can manifest itself.

TIC approach in healthcare is **strength based **and congruent with person centered care. It is collaborative, supportive and focused on giving as much control as possible to the person.

Q

What are the principles of trauma informed care?

A
  1. Acknowledge the ongoing effects of trauma, validating that it is relevant and understand that a persons past experiences can affect their future functioning. External events can trigger people resulting in a range of illnesses or maladaptive coping.
Acknowledging can be life changing for some.
  2. Recognize the need for physical and emotional safety. This can be difficult. Environment should be clean, soothing, uncluttered with attention to seating arrangements and signage. Consistency and predictability important. Trust, acceptance and respect vital.
  3. Understand the nuances in the environment and interpersonal interactions. Intentionally integrate this way of being in all interactions. Give as much control and choice as possible.
