Q

What is the Tidal Model?

A

A philosophical approach to recovery…helping the nurse begin to understand what mental health might mean for the person in care and how that person might begin the complex voyage of recovery.

Emphasizes the lived experience of the person, their story and how they narrate it. Sees the nurse as entering a sacred space.

Q

What are the 3 domains of the person as outlined in the Tidal Model?

A

The world domain – where people bring out some of these private experiences and share them selectively with others. Connected to the “assessment piece” in nursing.

The Self – the self domain is the place we maintain our private thoughts & experiences. Here is where nurses might learn about risk to self or others. A co-created safety plan becomes part of “the self”

The others domain – where people act out their life story with other people; influencing & being influenced by others. Connected to supports/protective factors.

Q

What are the 10 commitment of the Tidal Model?

A
  1. Value the voice (my story – not your interpretation of my story)
  2. Respect the language (our language of our own story is unique)
  3. Develop genuine curiosity (seek to better understand the storyteller)
  4. Become the apprentice (I am my own expert on my own story)
  5. Use the available tool kit (listen for my examples of what has worked for me)
  6. Craft the step beyond (help me envision moving forward)
    1. Give the gift of time (We find the time for what is important to us)
  7. Reveal personal wisdom (I have a powerful storehouse of wisdom, find it)
  8. Know that change is constant (change is inevitable, growth is optional, help me reveal my wisdom to sustain me through recovery)
  9. Be transparent (I am a team with the patient; I am in a privileged position as your nurse & you need me to model confidence & transparency so I know what is being done & why)
