- middle: spine & acromion of scapula
- inferior: base of spine of scapula

- ventral rami of 3rd & 4th cervical nerves
- CN XI + C3/4 fibers = subtrapezial plexus on deep surface of muscle

A
- raise, retract, rotate scapula
- bilateral contraction of superior fibers: extend head
- unilateral contraction of upper fibers: laterally flexes head & cervical vertebrae

- Elevate scapula
- with Serratus anterior & levator scapulae form force couple to rotate the scapula (upwards)
