transpiration Flashcards
step 1 of transpiration
water evaporates form the mesophyll cells in a process called transpiration
step 2 of water transport in xylem
water molecules form H bonds between on another and hence tend to stick together - cohesion
step 3 of water transport in xylem
water forms a continuous unbroken column across the mesophyll cells and down the xylem.
step 4 of water transport in xylem
as water evaporates from the mesophyll cells in the leaf into the air spaces beneath the stomata, more molecules of water are drawn up behind it as a result of transpiration. This is called the transpiration pull.
step 5 of water transport in xylem
a column of water is therefore pulled up the xylem as a result of transpiration. this is called the transpiration pull.
step 6 of water transport in xylem
transpiration pull puts the xylem under tension so there’s a negative pressure within the xylem, hence the name cohesion-tension theory.
