Transgender 2 Flashcards

1
Q

Is social understanding of race and gender fixed?

A

IBut we also think that it is a mistake to base this asymmetry on notions about who “really is” a woman or who “really is” Black. The social world is a dynamic and ever-changing place. Some people think that the social rules that govern what it takes to be a woman or to be Black have never changed—that these rules are fixed and naturally determined, and thus unchanging and unquestionable. We think that’s wrong: the rules of gender and race are always changing. And given this, the question that really matters isn’t whether individuals like Diallo and Krug are in fact Black given our present rules of racial classification, but whether they should be.

Q

Examples of social categories that are not fixed?

A

But this hardly settles whether octopuses should be considered food. In short, rules about what belongs to social categories like “eligible voters,” “legal disabilities,” “food” ,”Family” or” Childhood” are not fixed. Neither are they guaranteed to be legitimate: in many cases, commonly accepted rules for social classification have been deeply unjust. The malleability of gender and race classifications suggests to us that the typical conversations about transgender identities and Black transracial identities are the wrong conversations.

Q

Is pigeon milk real milk?

A

It’s often called “crop milk,” because it comes from special cells in the bird’s crop. The crop is a section of the lower esophagus in some birds that is used for storing food before digestion. Unlike milk from mammals, pigeon milk doesn’t come from a mammary gland.

Q

Should we revises our classifications for race classifications?

A

In cases where revising a classification would have a negative sociopolitical impact that outweighs the good of respecting how an individual identifies, we think that the classification should not be revised.

Q

How do we define blackness?

A

Being Black in the United States is similar to being a person who qualifies for IRSSA reparations in at least one important respect: being Black isn’t simply a matter of internal identification; it is also a matter of how your community and ancestors have been treated by other people, institutions, and governments.

Q

What is Qanon?

A

The core QAnon conspiracy theory is that a cabal of Satanic,[2][3][4] cannibalistic sexual abusers of children operating a global child sex trafficking ring conspired against former U.S. President Donald Trump during his term in office.[8] The QAnon conspiracy theory has direct roots in Pizzagate, an Internet conspiracy theory that appeared one year earlier; it also incorporates elements of many other theories.[9] Some experts have described QAnon as a cult.[10][11]

Followers of the conspiracy theorists say that the Trump administration secretly fought the cabal of pedophiles, and would conduct mass arrests and executions of thousands of cabal members on a day known as “the Storm” or “the Event”.[12]
