Porn Industry Flashcards

Q

Does the porn industry put profits above all else?

A

Pornography, like any industry, prioritizes profits above all else. Its business model provides little to no incentives to regulate the content that users upload. It would not be profitable to get rid of something that people clearly enjoy. In this sense, Pornhub is the perfect blend of racism, patriarchy, and capitalism because it takes advantage of people’s biases to make a profit. Pornography platforms make money off leaked videos of 14-year-old girls, revenge porn, violent depictions of rape, and in a broader sense, racist and sexist content.

Q

Does pornhub business model incentives violence and sexual exploitation?

A

Debates about the ethics of porn can often seem abstract and ideological, but it is important that they centre around the people they tangibly impact. The critique should not seek to criminalize and punish sex workers for making a living. Moreover, not all porn is created equal, and the rise of ethical porn provides an important alternative. Instead, criticism should be aimed at companies like Pornhub and their respective business models, which incentivize them to profit off of the violence and trauma of others.

Q

Who is Rose Kalemba?

A

Such was the case for Rose Kalemba, who was raped at 14, with the video subsequently being uploaded to Pornhub. Kalemba begged Pornhub to take the videos down, saying that she was a minor, but they were only removed after she set up an email address posing as a lawyer and emailed threatening legal action. When asked on this, Pornhub said that they allow all forms of ‘sexual expression.’

Q

How many people visit Pornhub a day?

A

It’s clear that Pornhub needs reform. However, arguing for a blanket prohibition of porn is unrealistic and unhelpful. In 2019 there was an average of 115 million visits to Pornhub per day. If the site was removed, no doubt 5 more would crop up in its place. And

Q

What is racial fetishization?

A

Racial fetishization refers to the sexual attraction or fixation on a particular race, ethnicity, or skin color. It can involve objectifying individuals of a certain race and reducing them to sexual stereotypes, which can be dehumanizing and disrespectful. This can lead to harmful and discriminatory behaviors towards individuals of that race, and it is considered a form of racism.

It is one of the largest adult entertainment companies in the world and owns many popular websites in the industry, including Pornhub, RedTube, and YouPorn, among others. Q

Pornhub origins?

A

Pornhub’s origins date back to 2007, when an entrepreneur named Matt Keezer bought the domain for about three thousand dollars, after cold-calling its owner. Keezer joined with several business partners, including Stephane Manos and Ouissam Youssef, whom he had met through Foosball tournaments when they were all students at Concordia University, in Montreal. A few of the business partners had recently started a paid porn site called Brazzers. Folding Brazzers and Pornhub into a new company, the partners named it Mansef, a combination of “Manos” and “Youssef.”

Q

What does Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act of 1996 state about interactive computer service?

A

Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act of 1996, which states that an “interactive computer service” cannot be treated as a publisher of information provided by a third party. The provision was conceived in order to allow the Internet to grow without being buried in lawsuits. But it also means that, when tube sites are confronted with complaints about videos depicting rape, sexual images of children, revenge porn, and other content uploaded without consent, they can claim that they are not liable. Experts at the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children, a nonprofit organization that tracks child-sexual-abuse material, told me that this has allowed the online porn industry to grow with little accountability.
