Trans-Theoretical Model of Behavior Change Flashcards
Four points of Client centred approach
- provide affirmations/reassurance about clients current practices
- offer guidance (with permission) to help client set goals and provide support for relapse planning
- consider clients motivational needs and stage of readiness to initiate and sustain a program of regular PA
- provide space for client to identify their own barriers and propose own solutions
what is ambivalence
having both positive and negative feelings towards a behavior
trans-theoretical model of change says
people change habitual behaviours such as PA slowly, by passing through a series of specific stages, each characterized by a pattern of psychosocial and behavioral changes
5 stages of TTM
pre-contemplation contemplation preparation action maintenance
what is pre contemplation
not intending to change
pros for pA out weighed by cons
may be demoralized and not thinking about their habits
what is contemplation stage
intending to change in the next few months
has some awareness of benefits of benefits of change
ambivalent and maybe has low self confidence
what is preparation stage
individual has decided to take action and is actively planning on doing so in teh future
knows motivating factors for PA, ambivalence has been addressed
has participated in PA maybe once or twice
what is active stage
has committed to new behaviour and is consistently engaging
continues in this stag for first 6 months
risk for relapse is high
what is maintenance stage
behavior now adopted more than 6 months activity high confidence learned strategies to deal with lapses doesn't need as much support
does every client start at stage 1 of TTM?
no, they are start at any point on the spectrum
is moving through the stages always in a linear fashion
no, client may skip a stage or cycle back through stages
every client moves at own pace
what do you focus on in pre contemplation and contemplation stage when working with client
focus on cognitive part, moving them through ambivalence, how they feel
what do you focus on in preparation and action stage when working with client
focus on actions, what they are doing and saying
