Terminology + Intro Flashcards
Def: Health
a state of complete physical, mental and social well being, not merely na absence of disease
Physical Activity
all leisure and non- leisure body movements produced by skeletal muscles, resulting in increased energy expenditure
Exercise
PA that is planned, structured, repetitive and purposeful to improve or maintain one or more components of physical health
Physical Fitness
a set of attribute or characteristic that people have that related to their ability to perform physical activity
Health Related Fitness
includes body comp, aerobic fitness and/or musculoskeletal fitness with goal of increasing a health related aspect of self
Performance Related Fitness
includes agility, speed, power and motor skill performance with a performance goal, also includes health related fitness components
Sedentary Behavior
any waking activity with an energy expenditure of less than to equal to 1.5 METS while in a sitting, reclining or lying posture
what is a MET and what is the oxygen/kg/minute value
metabolic equivalent - objective measure of the ratio at which a person expends energy relative to energy associated with sitting quietly
1 MET = 3.5 ml oxygen/kg/minute
MET value for seeing
about 1
MET for sedentary, light, moderate and vigorous
sedentary = less than or equal to 1.5 light = 1.5 to 2.9 Moderate = 3.0-5.9 vigorous = 6.0 +
How many Canadian adults get the recommended minimum 150 minutes MVPA per week (2007-2009)
15%
“costs” of inactivity
lack of PA ranks 4th among 5 leading factors of global mortality
82% of Canadian have inactivity as a modifiable risk factor for chronic disease risk
costs health care system about 6.8 billion/year
greater time spend sedentary is associated with
elevated risk for all-cause mortality
3 main ways to assess PA levels
Objective/technological direct methods
- calorimeter, doubly labeled water, direct observation
Objectie/technological indirect methods
- accelerometer, pedometer, HR monitor, GPS
Self-report
- questionnaires
- interviews
