Self Determination Theory Flashcards
Client centred coaching is
each client is the expert on their own body, and have their own ability and reasons to make change.
idea that individuals are more likely to make lasting change if it comes from within
coach centred coaching is
the idea that the coach is the main driver, and has to tell the client what to do. This approach works for some people in some situations.
What is a barrier
something in the clients mind that makes something difficult or impossible to do
What is self efficacy
the belief in our own abilities to meet challenges and complete tasks
Three main reasons people engage in PA
health benefits; enjoyment/pleasure; body & self image
common barriers to PA
time, money, motivation, experience, confidence, location, environment, family PA history, role models, friends
Core principles of behavior change modes
- Behavior change is a process
- Effective change must come from within, not entirely from the coach
- interventions must be tailored to the individual
- planning is a critical factor in change management
self determination theory focuses on
the degree to which an individual’s behavior is self- determined and the processes through which an individual acquires the motivation to initiate new behaviours and maintain them over time
- where are they at mentally and are they prepared to make these changes
- recognizes importance of ones social environment
Motivation is and 3 characteristics of it
degree of determination, drive or desire with which an individual approaches or avoids a behaviour
- intensity of energy/effort
- direction (for/avoid)
- persistence (all the time or sometimes or not at a ll)
is all motivation equal according to SDT
no - extrinsic and intrinsic
what is intrinsic motivation
engagement in an activity for its own sake
extrinsic motivation
receive something form others or avoid certain negative outcomes
SDT says individuals have 3 basic psychological needs
Autonomy - I make the decision, I am not told what to do
Competence - master skills, do things well
Relatedness - social aspect, need to be with others
explain the self determination motivation continuum from a motivation to intrinsic motivation
a motivation: no regulation, no intention or desire for PA
Extrinsic motivation:
- external regulation + introjected regulation
(tries to change to get.avoid a reward or out of sense of guilt)
-identified regulation + integrated regulation
(seen as an important goal to accomplish but still not yet intrinsically motivated)
Intrinsic motivation
- intrinsic regulation
(take part in PA for sheer enjoyment)
what is the job of the QEP with regards to the SDT
bolster a clients autonomy, competence and relatedness for regular PA
