Tramadol - Mechanism of action
Is an analgesic. Multiple actions within the nervous system, including opiate receptor stimulation and inhibition of re-uptake of noradrenaline and serotonin.
Tramadol - Indications
Age >=12 years for with moderate to severe pain, in conjunction with paracetamol and ibuprofen.
Tramadol - Contraindications
Known severe allergy.
Tramadol - Cautions
[CLAAP]
Has been taken in last four hours - additional can be administered if within scope of CPG’s.
Abdominal pain, esp is patient is unwell or vomiting.
Age >=75 years, esp if previous history of dementia or confusion, as it may worsen.
Confusion.
Pregnancy.
Tramadol - Dosage
50mg PO.
Tramadol - Common side effects
Nausea and/or vomiting.
Lightheadness, usual feeling.
Sedation.
Dry mouth.
Tramadol - Onset of effect
30-60 minutes
Tramadol - Duration of effect
4 - 8 hours.

50mg capsules
