Ondansetron - Mechanism of action
Is an antiemetic.
Blocks serotonin receptors in the brain and GI tract, resulting in reduction in nausea and vomiting.
Metabolised in the liver.
Ondansetron - Indications
Clinically significant nausea and/or vomiting.
Ondansetron - Contraindications
Known severe allergy.
Age less than 1 year.
Ondansetron - Cautions
None
Ondansetron - Dosage
4mg IM for adult if IV access cannot be obtained.

Ondansetron - Common side effects
Headache.
Flushing.
Ondansetron - Onset of effect
5-10 minutes for IM
Ondansetron - Duration of effect
4 - 8 hours.
Ondansetron - Preparation
Ampoule containing 4mg in 2ml
Ampoule containing 8mg in 4ml
Ondansetron - Repeats
May be repeated after 20 minutes if required.
