Trait and Biological Perspective Flashcards
Factor Analysis
a statistical technique that permits a researcher to reduce a large number of measures to a small number of clusters or factors; it identifies the clusters of behaviour or test scores that are highly correlated with one another
What is the goal of trait theorist’s?
Condense all these behavioural descriptions into a manageable number of basic traits that can capture personal individuality
What is Cattell’s Sixteen Personality Factors? List examples of what they are
Measures individual difference on on each of the dimensions and provide a comprehensive personality description.
•(the lower score on the self perceived personality test)
•Reserved, Less intelligent, affected by feelings, submissive, serious, expedient, Timid, tough-minded, trusting Practical, Forthsight, self assured, conservative, group dependent, uncontrolled, relax
Eysenck Extraversion- Stability
The theory suggests that there are the basic dimensions in which personality is based
• Introversion - extroversion
•Stability vs instability
•Psychoticism Self- Control
Psychoticism
Someone who is creative and has a tendency towards nonconformity, impulsitivity and social deviance
What are the Big Five ?
Openness Conscientiousness Extraversion Agreeableness Neuroticism (OCEAN)
How many faucets in the big 5?
6 faucet or subcategorie for each of the big five
What test is used to measure the big 5?
NEO personality inventory (NEO-PI)
Eysenck was the first modern theorist to suggest a biological basis for major personality traits
TRUE OR FALSE
Extreme introverts are chronically underaroused?
FALSE
They are chronically over aroused as to try to minimize other stimulus
What are Cloningers 3 personality traits?
Novelty- seeking
Harm avoidance
Reward dependence
all due to neurotransmitters
Self monitoring
a personality trait that reflects people’s tendencies to regulate their social behaviour in accord with situational cues as opposed to internal values, attitudes, and needs
In Neuroticism people what does the brain show?
Less activity in parts of the temporal lobe
If a person scores high in extraversion in NEO-PI is related t what brain activity?
More activity within specific regions of the frontal cortex
What part of the brain is associated with openness?
What are two key components of openness?
The prefrontal cortex
- A motivational component, having to do with interest in novelty and complexity
- cognitive component, having to do with the manner in which information is processed and organized
