Social Cognitive Theories Flashcards
Social Cognitive Theory
a cognitive-behavioural approach to personality, developed by Albert Bandura and Walter Mischel, that emphasizes the role of social learning, cognitive processes, and self-regulation
Who emphasizes internal personal causes of behaviour?
Psychodyamic, humanistic and trait theorists
Who emphasizes external, environmental causes of behaviour?
Radical behaviourists
Reciprocal Determinism
Bandura’s model of two-way causal relations between people, behaviour, and the environment
•The person, the person’s behaviours and the environment all influence one another in a pattern of two- way causal links
What does Julian Rotter believe influences our behaviours in a given situation?
- Expectancy
2. Reinforcement Value
Expectancy
Our perception of how likely it is that certain consequences will occur if we engage in a particular behaviour within a specific situation
Reinforcement Vale
How much we desire or dread the outcome that we expect the behaviour to produce
Internal-external locus of control
Rotter’s generalized expectancy that one’s outcomes are under personal versus external control
Due to the fact that locus of control applies across many life domains it is called what?
Generalized Expectancy
The process of human agency contains what four aspects ?
Intentionality Forethought Self reactiveness Self reflectiveness •Proposed by Bandura
Self Efficacy
the conviction that we can perform the behaviours necessary to produce a desired outcome
What four classes of information affect self efficacy beliefs?
- Performance Experiences
- Observational Learning “if she can do it so can I”
- Verbal Persuasion: “you can do it”
- Emotional arousal : high arousal such as anxiety decreases self efficacy
What is the consistency paradox?
Although we expect and perceive a high level of consistency in people’s behaviours, the actual level of consistency is surprisingly low
Cognitive affective personality system (CAPS)
A personality theory proposed by Mischel in which there is a dynamic interplay between the characteristics that a person brings to the situation and the characteristics of the situation.
If… then… behaviour consistency
consistency in behaviour, but only within similar situations
