- information overload
- sometimes better to learn through experience and not via presentation on the history of the business etc.
best to keep it short

other training methods
learning by watching + doing apprenticeships courses vocational training academic training
learning by watching and doing
this type needs spare capacity so that an experienced member of staff can deliver the training
apprenticeships
training that is on-the-job and in college for a few days a week/1 day a week
used ins killed trades like plumbing or cars etc.
courses
can be for if a particular group of staff aren’t working efficiently
or the business feels like there are savings to be made by offering these new work practices and training them up to use it (i.e. new till system)
academic training
for the jobs that need it i.e. accounting
trainee accounts will need to attend academic accounting courses to gain the necessary qualifications
vocational training

what the government offers as TRAINING INITIATIVES
Investors in People
- involves developing skills in the workforce to meet government criteria in customer service for example
- when the firm achieves the target = plaque of achievement
The Skills Funding Agency
- government organisation that provides £4 bill of support for COLLEGES, PRIVATE TRAINERS AND EMPLOYERS
Training Needs Analysis
by doing this, a business ensures that its workers are given the right skills to do the job effectively
important that everyone is included in this exercise
used if there have been skill shortages that have been overlooked in the past as no one has noticed the lack of training
or a failure in communication has occurred
how to do a TNA
the business will collect information from workers, customers, managers, suppliers as well as observing how the role is carried out in different areas
TNA should help to resolve the problem by highlighting problems in particular business areas
feedback is collated and analysed to make sure that training is appropriate and not a waste of money/time
end result = a better trained workforce
things to consider as part of TNA
- looking at the future
( what it wants to achieve for sales/output/productivity/market share - the results gained from the initial survey
(who’s to be trained + how) - number of people who need the training
(2-3 then send them on a course to reduce cost) - will the results of the training be worth how much it costs
- external trainers need to match the business budget and business style/purpose etc.
- does all the training need to be done externally or internally
