how does motivation come about
arises from positive factors - when an employee is motivated the right conditions have been created and the employee wants to behave in a certain way
if an employee who does not care about their work is told that unless their conduct improves - theyll recieve a formal warning which may chnage their behavior but not motivate them to do so
motivation definition
a strong desire to act in a particular way to achieve a certain result

someone who wants to work hard, takes pride in their work and is commited to acheiving the business goals
morale definition
‘work spirit’
if its high = members of the team or individual themselves are supportive of each other and theres a spirit of confidence and purpose = increased motivation
motivation importance
managers feel its ethically correct to make their employee’s lives stimulating as much as possible at work
want them to be motivated so theyre fully effective at helping the business at meeting their objectives.

monetary methods of motivation
motivation will result to linking worker perfomance to pay
Piecework, Commision, Profit sharing, Share ownership or Bonuses
non-monetary methods of motivation
motivation comes from things other than financial incentives
work thats interesting and challenging, responsibility, being part of a team, employee of the month, praise + acknowledgement from managers
benefits of a motivated workforce
- less prone to absenteeism
- lower rates of labour turnover - help to reduce costs
- see themselves as stakeholders and not as workers = more productive
- make change easier to implement
- better business image to external people i.e. customers, government etc.
- employees will be more commited and more willing to go the extra mile for the business
