The provision of job related skills and knowledge necessary to fulfil the requirements of a job.
Induction training
Training provided to new employees to help them reach the same performance levels as experienced workers.
On-the-job training
Training that is carried out in the workplace.
Off-the-job training
Training that is carried out outside the workplace.
Advantages of on-the-job training
More productive and cost-effective
Can help to build social relationships
Direct experience of work systems
Advantages of off-the-job training
Employees are not distracted work pressures
Using specialist trainers may lead to a higher quality of training
Disadvantages of on-the-job training
The trainer may not have adequate skills and knowledge
Bad habits of the trainer could be passed on to new employees
Disadvantages of off-the-job training
Expensive
Can be too general and not specific to the employee’s job
Some employees can leave once training has been completed
